Rockford Park is 104 acres of rolling hilltop above the Brandywine, and its landmark is the 115-foot stone Rockford Tower, built in 1901. It's both a working water tower and an observation tower — a staircase wraps the steel tank up to stone arches with views over the valley, open on summer Sundays and Monday-concert evenings.
The rest of the park is mostly open, gently sloping lawn ringed by old trees — made for running, balls, kites, and picnics, and one of the city's favorite sledding hills once it snows. It's also a place Wilmington gathers: the Wilmington Flower Market each May and free Monday-evening summer concerts.
Set expectations with the kids — this is open green space and a landmark to climb, not a playground, so bring something to do. The park exists thanks to William Poole Bancroft, a Quaker mill owner remembered as the father of Wilmington's park system, who began donating this land in 1889.
