An indoor museum visit - more looking than doing, so plan a shorter stop with small kids.
Operates three historic properties in Historic New Castle: Amstel House (Dutch colonial mansion, 1738), Dutch House (oldest surviving house in DE), and Old Library Museum. Fourth Friday arts events, Liberty Encounters, seasonal tours. Walking distance between all three sites. New Castle historic district is stroller-friendly on brick sidewalks — uneven in spots. Free street parking. Under 12 free.

April-December: Thu-Sat 9:30am-4:30pm, Sun 12pm-4pm (last tour 3pm). Closed Mon-Wed.
Seasonal hours
Closed in January. Limited hours in February and March (check website). The NCHS may be closed for the month of August or by appointment only. Closed on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve.
Parking
Free on-street parking is available throughout Historic New Castle. Public parking lots are also available at Second and Chestnut Streets, on West Third Street, the corner of West Third and South Streets, and at West Third & Battery Park.
