What to Expect
Bethany calls itself one of 'the Quiet Resorts,' and the label is earned. You get the full beach-town experience — boardwalk, fries, soft serve, mini golf nearby, evening concerts — at maybe half the intensity of Rehoboth and a fraction of Ocean City. The boardwalk is short and uncommercial; the downtown is two walkable blocks; the beach is wide, guarded in season, and free.
The rhythm that works with kids: park once on a side street, morning on the beach, fries and the playground around lunch, quiet time, then back for a free bandstand show after dinner — Thursday and Saturday nights in summer, with Kids Nights on Wednesdays in July. On Sundays, start at the farmers market (8 to noon, across from PNC Bank) and let the kids snack their way through it.
Fun fact for the fry line: Five Guys' founders grew up on Ocean City boardwalk fries and have said outright they modeled their fries on Thrasher's. The original is better, and it comes with an ocean.
Who It's Best For
Bethany works for the whole spread. Babies and toddlers get a flat, short boardwalk and a fenced-feeling downtown; preschoolers get the playground, soft serve, and bandstand shows; elementary kids get boogie boards and Thrasher's. Teens may angle for Rehoboth or Ocean City — that's sort of the point of Bethany.

The Bandstand

Thrasher's French Fries

Sunday Farmers Market

Bethany Beach Nature Center

The Beach

What to Skip with Little Ones
- • Arriving midday on a July or August Saturday — you'll spend the nap window hunting for parking.
- • Garfield Pkwy meter spaces for a beach day — the 2-hour limit will burn you. Side streets only.

Getting There
Parking
Pay-to-park everywhere downtown May 15–Sept 15, 10am–10pm, $4/hr. Garfield Pkwy spaces have a 2-hour limit — fine for fries and the playground, useless for a beach day. Side-street pay spaces have no time limit. Parking is honestly the hardest part of a Bethany day in July.
On summer weekends arrive before 9:30am or after 3pm. Park once on a side street and don't move the car — everything downtown is walkable. Pay by app so you can top up from your towel.
Entrance
Garfield Parkway (Rt 26) is the main drag and dead-ends at the boardwalk. Everything in this guide is on or within two blocks of it.
Parent Logistics
The boardwalk is flat and short — easy with any stroller. Garfield Pkwy sidewalks are wide. Sand is sand; bring a carrier for the beach itself.

Thrasher's french fries on Garfield Pkwy — cider vinegar, no ketchup, that's the rule since 1929. Soft serve on the boardwalk. Grotto Pizza, Candy Kitchen, and a strip of kid-tolerant restaurants all within two blocks.
Snack strategy: A bucket of Thrasher's on a boardwalk bench is the whole snack plan. For a real meal with tired kids, eat early — Bethany restaurants fill by 6pm in summer.
Pro Tips
- ✓ The whole town is built for park-once-walk-everywhere. Fight for one side-street spot, then stop thinking about the car.
- ✓ Kids Nights at the bandstand (Wednesdays in July) are aimed squarely at the under-10 crowd — the easiest free evening out of the summer.
- ✓ September is the local-parent secret: warm water, empty beach, full Thrasher's, and the fall bandstand season.
- ✓ Thrasher's doesn't do ketchup and won't start. Commit to the vinegar.
- ✓ Beach wheelchairs are seasonal town amenities — ask at the boardwalk; verify availability with town hall first.

Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings in season are dramatically calmer than weekends. June before the July crush and the first half of September (still warm, meters until Sept 15, town quiet) are the sweet spots. Sunday mornings have the farmers market.
Seasonal Notes
2026 marks the town's 125th anniversary. The Bandstand summer concert series runs Thursday and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM, with family-friendly Family Nights on Wednesdays in July that start earlier, around 6 PM; September shows shift to Friday and Saturday at 6:30 PM. Fall brings Monday Movies on the Bandstand and Oktoberfest in mid-October (Oct 17 in 2026), and parking meters come off after Sept 15.
Rainy Day?
The Nature Center's discovery room (Thu-Sun) and Candy Kitchen cover a drizzle. For a real washout, Rehoboth's indoor options are 20 minutes north.
While You're in the Area
Sunday: farmers market at 8, playground, beach until lunch, Thrasher's on the way out. Wednesdays, the Sea Colony Marketplace farmers market (8-noon) is 5 minutes south.
