What to Expect

Brandywine Park runs along the Brandywine Creek through north Wilmington. It's not one thing — it's a collection of things that happen to share the same creek valley. The paved path along the water is the spine: flat, shaded, stroller-friendly, and connects everything.

With little kids, the Jasper Crane Rose Garden playground is home base. It's a decent playground with a climbing structure, swings, and a small open lawn. From there you can walk the creek trail, visit the Zoo (separate admission), or just sit on a bench and watch the water.

The park connects to longer trail networks heading north toward Rockford Park and Alapocas, and south toward the Riverfront. Older kids and tweens can bike the path or scramble on the Blue Rocks — large boulders in the creek that are a Wilmington rite of passage.

On Saturday mornings from May to October, the Brandywine Park Farmers Market sets up near the Josephine Fountain. It's small but good, and the combination of market + creek + playground makes for a strong Saturday morning.

Who It's Best For

Babies and toddlers: playground and creek bank. Preschoolers: playground, short trail walks, creek wading. Elementary: creek exploration, longer trails, climbing on Blue Rocks. Tweens: bike paths, trail running, creek fishing. One of the few places that genuinely works for every age.

Highlights

Jasper Crane Rose Garden & Playground

Ages 1-7

The family anchor. Playground with climbing structure and swings, surrounded by the Rose Garden. Open lawn for running. Close to street parking.

Creek Trail

All ages

Paved path along the Brandywine Creek. Flat, shaded, stroller-friendly. About 1.5 miles from the Rose Garden to the Rockford Park area. You'll see herons, turtles, and kayakers.

Blue Rocks

Ages 4+

Large boulders in and along the creek — kids climb on them, wade between them, skip rocks off them. Located north of the Zoo along the trail. Not an official attraction, just a Wilmington thing.

Creek Wading

Ages 2+

Several spots along the trail where the bank is gentle enough to wade in. The water is shallow near the edges in summer. Bring water shoes or sandals you don't mind getting wet.

Brandywine Park Farmers Market

All ages

Saturdays 9 AM-12 PM, May through October, near the Josephine Fountain (next to the Zoo). Local produce, baked goods, prepared food. Small and manageable — you can browse the whole thing in 20 minutes.

Monkey Hill

Ages 2-10

A steep grassy hill near the Zoo that kids love to run up and roll down. Nothing fancy — just a good hill. Great in fall when the leaves are changing.

What to Skip with Little Ones

  • The trail north of Rockford Park — it gets steeper, narrower, and less maintained. Stick to the main creek path.
  • Creek wading after heavy rain — the water rises fast and the current gets strong.
  • Trying to combine the Zoo, playground, farmers market, AND a long trail walk in one visit. Pick two.

Logistics

Admission

Free admission

The park itself is free. The Brandywine Zoo inside the park has separate admission ($8 adult, $6 child). The farmers market is free to browse.

Getting There

Parking

Street parking along N Park Dr and Augustine Cut-Off. Small lot near the Jasper Crane Rose Garden (fills early on weekends). Additional parking near the Zoo entrance off Van Buren St.

Saturday farmers market mornings are the busiest — arrive by 9:15 or park further up Augustine Cut-Off and walk down. On regular days, parking is rarely a problem.

Entrance

Multiple entry points. The most family-friendly: N Park Dr near the Rose Garden for playground access, or the paved path from the Baynard Blvd bridge for the creek trail.

Parent Logistics

👶 Strollers Friendly

The paved path along the creek is smooth and flat — great for strollers. The playground area is accessible. Dirt trails off the main path (Monkey Hill, Blue Rocks area) are not stroller-friendly. Bring a carrier if you want to explore off-path.

🚻 Bathrooms

Restrooms near the Zoo entrance and at the farmers market pavilion (seasonal). Limited options on the trail — plan accordingly.

🚼 Changing Tables

The Zoo restrooms have changing tables. Park restrooms do not.

⛱️ Shade

Excellent. The creek trail is heavily tree-lined. The playground has partial shade. The Rose Garden and open lawn areas are exposed.

Food & Snacks

No food on-site. No permanent food concession in the park itself. The Saturday farmers market has prepared food vendors (May-October). The Zoo has a small snack stand.

Snack strategy: Pack snacks and water — there's no shortage of benches and grassy spots for a picnic. On farmers market Saturdays, grab breakfast from a vendor and eat by the creek. Trolley Square is a 10-minute walk for lunch (Kid Shelleen's, Taco Grande, etc.).

Pro Tips

  • The walk from Brandywine Park to Trolley Square is about 10 minutes on foot. Great for post-park lunch or coffee.
  • Bring a change of clothes in summer. Between the creek and the playground, someone's getting wet.
  • The tennis courts on Park Dr are public and usually available on weekday mornings.
  • For a longer adventure, the paved path connects north to Rockford Park (great views of the city) and south toward the Riverfront.
  • The Rose Garden blooms peak in June. Worth a visit even without kids.
  • Parking meters on Park Dr are enforced — bring quarters or use the ParkMobile app.

When to Go

Best Time to Visit

Saturday mornings for the farmers market (May-October, 9 AM-12 PM). Weekday mornings for a quiet playground visit. Late afternoon for creek wading in summer.

Seasonal Notes

Spring for wildflowers on the trails. Summer for creek wading and the Saturday farmers market (typically May–October, 9 AM–12 PM near the Josephine Fountain — check spreadgoodkarmafoundation.org for exact dates). Fall for foliage along the creek. Winter is quiet but the trails still work — dress warm.

Rainy Day?

This is an outdoor park — there's no indoor fallback. On a rainy day, head to the Delaware Children's Museum (10 min drive) or Delaware Museum of Nature & Science (5 min drive) instead.

While You're in the Area

Brandywine Zoo is inside the park (separate admission). Trolley Square is a 10-minute walk for lunch. Rockford Park is connected via the trail for city views. Delaware Art Museum is a 5-minute drive.
