DuPont Environmental Education Center
An urban wetland boardwalk and observation tower on the Riverwalk — quiet, free, and a sleeper pick with toddlers.
The Quick Version
- • Free Delaware Nature Society nature center on the south end of the Wilmington Riverwalk, at the edge of the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge.
- • A four-story building with a 30-foot observation tower over the marsh, a small exhibit hall, and a quarter-mile handicap-accessible Pond Loop boardwalk into the wetlands.
- • Drop-in family programs run most weekends: Storytime at the Marsh (ages 1–7), Meet Marsh Animals (toddlers up), Netting in the Marsh (ages 4+).
- • Easier and quieter than the rest of the Riverfront. Pairs naturally with mini golf + the Children's Museum a few minutes north.

What to Expect
DEEC is the quiet end of the Wilmington Riverfront. The rest of the district has mini golf, baseball, a children's museum, and restaurants; DEEC sits at the southern tip, where the developed waterfront gives way to 212 acres of tidal marsh — the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge.
The building itself is purpose-built for kids and birders. Ground floor: lobby, restrooms, the boardwalk exit. Second floor: a small exhibit hall about the Christina River watershed, a freshwater aquarium, and a four-story observation tower with floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the marsh. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair at the front desk — herons, egrets, ospreys, and turtles are reliable sightings, and the tower is high enough that you can usually spot something interesting in five minutes.
The boardwalk loop is the headline outdoor feature. It's a flat wooden walkway that extends out over the marsh, with interpretive signs and a few seating overlooks. Strollers handle it easily. The loop is short — 20–30 minutes at a toddler pace — but it's the only place in the Wilmington area where you can take a baby into a tidal wetland on a flat path.
The real reason to plan a visit is the drop-in programs. DEEC is run by the Delaware Nature Society (same crew as Ashland and Coverdale) and they put on family programming most weekends: Storytime at the Marsh for the youngest set, Meet Marsh Animals where kids handle live critters with a naturalist, and Netting in the Marsh, where you actually use dip nets in the wetland — that's the one elementary kids talk about. Check the DNS events calendar before you go; an unscheduled visit is fine, but a programmed visit is much better.
The vibe is calm and naturalist. You'll see grandparents with toddlers, birders with serious lenses, and the occasional school group on a weekday. It is not crowded the way the rest of the Riverfront can get.
Did You Know?
Borrow binoculars at the front desk — DEEC keeps a small lending stash for kids, and the four-story tower over the marsh is reliably good for spotting herons, egrets, ospreys, and turtles in under five minutes.
Who It's Best For
Babies and toddlers: Storytime at the Marsh, the indoor exhibit space, riding the elevator up to the observation tower for a stroller-friendly view. Preschoolers: Meet Marsh Animals, the boardwalk loop, looking for turtles and herons from the tower. Elementary: Netting in the Marsh (4+) is the standout — you actually dip a net in the wetland and look at what comes up. Older kids and teens can join the Christina River Rangers program and beginner kayak sessions.
Highlights
Observation Tower
All agesFour-story tower with elevator access and panoramic windows over the Peterson marsh. Borrow binoculars at the desk. Reliably good for spotting herons, egrets, ospreys, and turtles. Stroller and wheelchair accessible.
Pond Loop Boardwalk
All agesQuarter-mile handicap-accessible boardwalk extending over the tidal wetland. ~20-minute loop with overlook benches and interpretive signs. The most stroller-friendly wetland walk in NCC.
Storytime at the Marsh
Ages 1–6Free drop-in program (typically Wednesdays). A naturalist reads a nature-themed book and leads a short related activity. Aimed at ages 1–7.
Meet Marsh Animals
Ages 2+Drop-in program where kids see and sometimes handle live wetland critters — turtles, frogs, snakes — with a naturalist. Runs most Saturdays in season.
Netting in the Marsh
Ages 4–11Hands-on program where kids dip nets in the wetland and identify what comes up. Ages 4+. The standout activity at DEEC for elementary-age kids.
Indoor Exhibit Hall
Ages 3–10Small second-floor exhibit on the Christina River watershed, with a freshwater aquarium and a few hands-on stations. 20–30 minutes for a curious kid.
What to Skip with Little Ones
- • The boardwalk at dusk in summer — mosquitoes can be intense over the marsh.
- • Trying to make a full afternoon out of DEEC alone. Pair it with the Children's Museum or mini golf up the Riverwalk for a stronger outing.
- • Going on a Monday — the visitor center is closed, and the boardwalk alone is a 20-minute stop.
Logistics
Admission
Free admission
General admission is free. Some programs (kayaking, certain guided sessions) have a fee; most drop-in marsh activities are free or by donation.
Membership tip: A Delaware Nature Society family membership covers DEEC plus Ashland and Coverdale and discounts programs across all three — worth it if you're doing more than one DNS program a year.
Getting There
Parking
Free dedicated lot at the building. Easy on weekdays; can fill on weekend program days and during Riverfront festivals.
If the DEEC lot is full, the larger free Riverfront lots (Lot K near the Children's Museum) are a 5–10 minute walk down the Riverwalk. On Blue Rocks game nights the whole Riverfront fills — go in the morning.
Entrance
Single entrance on the ground floor of the building, off the Riverwalk side. Take the elevator or stairs to the second-floor exhibit space and observation tower; the boardwalk loop starts at ground level.
Parent Logistics
Excellent. The building has an elevator, the boardwalk is wide and flat, and the Riverwalk approach is paved. One of the most stroller-friendly nature stops in NCC.
Clean restrooms inside the visitor center.
Changing table available in the restroom.
Mixed. The building and tower are fully shaded. The boardwalk is partly exposed over open marsh — bring hats and sunscreen in summer, and watch for mosquitoes at dusk.
Food & Snacks
No food on-site. No food service at DEEC. The Riverwalk has several family-friendly options within a short walk.
Snack strategy: Pack a snack — there are benches along the boardwalk and on the second-floor terrace. For a real meal, walk 10 minutes up the Riverwalk to Riverfront Market (food hall, counter service) or Big Fish Grill. Brew Ha Ha! at the Shipyard Shops is the closest coffee.
Pro Tips
- ✓ Check the Delaware Nature Society calendar before you drive over. A drop-in marsh program turns a quick stop into the real reason to come.
- ✓ Borrow binoculars at the front desk if you forgot yours — they have a small lending stash for kids.
- ✓ Combine DEEC with mini golf and the Delaware Children's Museum for a full Riverfront morning. It's a 10-minute walk along the Riverwalk between them.
- ✓ The observation tower is a sleeper rainy-day move — fully indoor, fully covered, and a great view even in bad weather.
- ✓ If you're already a DNS member for Ashland or Coverdale, your membership covers DEEC programs at the discounted rate too.
- ✓ Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds and boardwalk — useful if you're trying to combine a family stop with a dog walk.
When to Go
Best Time to Visit
Weekend mornings when a drop-in program is on the calendar — that's what turns DEEC from a quick stop into a real outing. Visitor center hours are Tue–Sat 10–4 and Sun 12–4. Bird activity is best early.
Seasonal Notes
Visitor Center hours: Tue–Sat 10 AM–4 PM, Sun 12–4 PM, closed Mondays and major holidays. The boardwalk and surrounding refuge are open dawn to dusk daily. Marsh programming is densest spring through early fall; the summer solstice celebration in June is a yearly free event.
Rainy Day?
The visitor center and observation tower are fully indoor and worth the visit on their own. Pair with the Delaware Children's Museum (5 minutes up the Riverwalk) for a full rainy-day combo.
While You're in the Area
Walk 10 minutes north up the Riverwalk to Riverwalk Mini Golf and the Delaware Children's Museum. Riverfront Market is a good stop for lunch on the way. Bike or stroll south on the Jack Markell Trail (5.5 miles, flat, paved) for a longer adventure toward New Castle.
